Common Emergencies
Urgent problems we see
We evaluate urgent concerns including tooth pain, swelling, dental trauma, and knocked-out teeth. Treatment depends on the clinical situation. We will stabilize the problem when possible and explain the appropriate next step if specialty or hospital care is needed.
Severe tooth pain
Pain that keeps you up at night, throbs, or does not settle with over-the-counter relief.
Broken or chipped tooth
From an accident, biting something hard, or a tooth that was already weakened. Save any pieces and bring them with you.
Lost or loose crown
A crown that has come off or shifted. Keep it if you have it — recementing it is often possible.
Lost filling
A missing filling leaves the tooth exposed and sensitive. A temporary filling can protect it while you decide on the next step.
Pain when biting
Sharp pain on pressure often points to a crack or a problem below the surface that an exam and X-ray can identify.
Dental trauma
A blow to the mouth, a tooth pushed out of position, or a knocked-out tooth. Come in as soon as you can.
Swelling around a tooth or gum
Swelling needs to be looked at promptly so we can work out what is causing it and what should happen next.
A tooth that feels cracked
Sensitivity to temperature or a tooth that just feels wrong. We will examine it and explain what we find.
Before you get here
Stay calm
Most urgent dental problems are manageable once someone has looked at them.
Manage pain safely
Over-the-counter pain relievers can help. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum.
Protect the area
Avoid chewing on that side and keep the area clean.
Save any pieces
If a tooth or a restoration has broken, bring the pieces with you. For a knocked-out tooth, handle it by the crown rather than the root, keep it moist, and come in immediately.
When to go to the emergency room
For severe facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or serious facial trauma, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Those situations need medical care first. For everything else, a dental exam is the right starting point and we can usually see you the same day.

Questions
Emergency dental FAQ
Can you see me today?
Often, yes. We keep room in the schedule for urgent problems and offer same-day emergency appointments. Call us as early in the day as you can and we will tell you honestly what is available.
Do you accept new emergency patients?
Yes. You do not need to be an existing patient of the practice to be seen for an urgent problem.
What does the $85 fee include?
It covers the emergency exam focused on your urgent problem, plus the necessary X-ray to see what is going on. Treatment is separate. We will explain your diagnosis, your options, and what they cost before anything goes ahead.
Can I come in without dental insurance?
Yes. Patients without dental insurance are welcome. We will give you the cost before treatment starts, and we offer financing options and a dental membership plan if that helps.
Can I book an emergency appointment online?
Yes, you can book through our online scheduler at any hour. If you are in significant pain, calling the office during opening hours is usually faster.
What should I select in the scheduler?
Choose “Emergency / Tooth Pain”. That tells our team the visit is urgent so we can set aside the right amount of time for you.
Can you repair a broken or chipped tooth?
In many cases, yes, and sometimes in the same visit. It depends on how much of the tooth is affected and what is underneath. We will examine it, explain what we find, and tell you what is realistic before starting.
What happens if I need a specialist?
We will diagnose the problem, help stabilize the situation when possible, and clearly explain the appropriate next step if specialty care is needed. You will leave knowing what is wrong and what happens next.
Can I text the office after hours?
Outside normal office hours, you may text us at (925) 689-4020. A team member monitors incoming messages, but response times may vary.
When should I go to the emergency room instead?
For severe facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or serious facial trauma, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Those need medical care, not a dental office.
